Whisky Spotlight - Miyagikyo Single Malt from Nikka Distsillery

9/25/2015

Today we have our 1st Whisky Spotlight for all of you whisky lovers visiting Kyoto. Let's talk about a fantastic Japanese whisky from Nikka Distillery called Miyagikyo Single Malt. Nikka distillery was founded in 1934 by legendary Japanese distiller Masataka Taketsuru. Taketsuru studied the art of distilling in Scotland and returned to Japan to help Suntory build the Yamazaki Distillery, Japan's first commercial whisky distillery and the home of Suntory's famous Yamazaki Single Malt. In 1934 Taketsuru left Suntory and opened his own distillery on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido in a place called Yoichi. Taketsuru felt that Hokkaido was the best location to distill whisky in Japan due to its similarity to Scotland in terms of climate and landscape.

Nikka opened the Miyagikyo Distillery in 1969 near Sendai, the capitol city of Miyagi Prefecture. This distillery is set in a gorgeous natural landscape with an ample supply of pure water. While the Yoichi Single Malt aims to be a truly Scottish style whisky the Miyagikyo Single Malt has a more unique, more Japanese flavor profile.

Tasting Notes from Nikka:

This single malt whisky features a sweet and elegant fragrance like fresh flowers, combined with a soft maltiness and a delicate, gentle and appealing mature essence derived from sherry casks.

From our tastings we picked up a delightfully chocolatey taste. The finish in the sherry casks adds a wonderful deep fruity tone. The Miyagikyo Single Malt is an excellent addition to any whisky collection.

New Premium Whisky from Suntory - The Chita Single Grain Whisky - Released September 1st, 2015 in Japan!

Big news this month in the world of Japanese whiskey! For the first time in 11 years Suntory has released a new premium whisky brand. Suntory is known internationally for The Yamazaki Single Malt, The Hakushu Single Malt, and Hibiki Japanese Harmony. On September 1st Suntory launched The Chita Single Grain Whisky. This whisky is produced at Suntory's Chita "Sun Grain" Distillery in Aichi Prefecture. The Chita Distillery was founded in 1972 and produces grain whisky that is blended with Hibiki Japanese Harmony and other blended whiskies from Suntory.

"Suntory is distinctly unique in making various kinds of grain whiskies, and by blending these together has managed to achieve a light-bodied yet complex flavored grain whisky." - from the box

The Chita is billed as a "single grain" whisky. This grain is corn, the main ingredient in bourbon whiskey. Like bourbon this whisky has a sweet flavor. However, if you look at the ingredients on the bottle you will notice that some malt is also used. The malt is most likely included in order to enhance the flavor profile and add the noticeable hint of smokiness. Suntory has worked tirelessly to establish a worldwide reputation for top quality spirits and The Chita is no exception. The Chita is a uniquely Japanese take on corn whisky with no shortage of refinement, complexity, and balance.

Tasting Notes from Suntory (translated from the bottle)
Color: bright gold
Aroma: pure & straight, woody sweetness from the barrel
Flavor: sweet & smooth
Aftertaste: faint lingering sweetness

The Chita is only available in Japan. Suntory has yet to announce when The Chita will have its internationally debut. It's bottled at 43% ABV in Suntory's characteristic 700ml bottle. We are proudly offering this fantastic new Japanese whisky here at Liquor Burn Gion in Kyoto. Buy a bottle and be the first to take it home from Japan!

More to come on The Chita soon.
